Ladies Singing the Blues on Broadway

Tuesday, November 13, 2007, 7:00pm

2537 Broadway at 95th Street
New York, NY

Part I: The great lady blues singers of Harlem Ghanniyya Green, Lady Cantrese and Lee Olive Tucker carry on the blues tradition on the shoulders of Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Sarah Vaughan. Harlem's own blues singers perform nightly at places like Showman's, St. Nick's Pub, and Lenox Lounge.

Part II: An all-star cast promises to bring the house down in a tribute to 85-year-old Rose Marie McCoy, one of the most prolific but least known songwriters of the 50s and 60s. McCoy's 850 published songs have been performed by legends from Big May Belle to Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner, from Ruth Brown to Bette Midler and Elvis Presley. Featuring renowned R&B singer Maxine Brown, R&B Hall of Famer Baby Washington and Rose Marie McCoy herself.

The Ladies Singing the Blues series celebrates and documents the sounds and stories of locally and nationally acclaimed blues crooners from Harlem, New Orleans, and throughout the world through a series of performances, symposiums, and lecture demonstrations. It is a new component of Community Works' harlem is... Music project, celebrating the legacy and history of music in Harlem through exhibitions and public programs.

Tickets: $30/$20; Peter Norton Symphony Space and Harlem Arts Alliance Members $26/$16. Purchase tickets at www.symphonyspace.org or by calling 212-864-5400.
